Year 3

In Autumn 1 children have been focusing on the sounds the letters "z, ll, y and j" make in Spanish.  They have also been learning classroom instructions (challenge them to play noughts and crosses with you in the games zone to practise!) and writing about their classroom using the different words for "the" in Spanish and making nouns plural.  Their written work was fantastic!  Here are some examples (click on image to enlarge):

In Spring 1 our Spanish topic is called "mi cumpleaños" (my birthday).  Children have learnt numbers up to 31, months and then they will link these together to say when their birthday is.

In Summer 2 our topic is "La Oruga muy Hambrienta" (the very hungry caterpillar).  We are going to learn the days of the week, some fruits, healthy and unhealthy foods and then read the story in Spanish.

Year 2

In Autumn 1 children have learnt how to greet each other in Spanish, ask how someone is feeling, say how they are feeling and say what they are called.  We begin each Spanish lesson with our "start of the lesson poem" and 2 children are chosen from the class to lead this poem.  This builds helps to build their confidence in speaking whilst practising pronunciation.

In Spring 1 we have continued to begin our lessons with the poem.  We have consolidated our learning from last half term and said how old we are.  We have learnt shapes and learnt how to say what are favourite shape is.

In Summer 1 we are learning colours and animals and then we are going to read "Brown Bear" in Spanish.  Children will then use the colours and animals they have learnt to write their own version of this story.

"I can" statements

Each half term, children are given "I can" statements with the outcomes for each lesson.  At the end of each lesson, children review their learning and self assess against the "I can" statements which are glued in their books.  Click here to see the "I can" statements for each year group for Summer 1.

Year 5

Spanish is being taught in Year 5 for the first time (they have been learning Spanish since Year 2).  In Autumn 1 children have been learning places in a town (look for a quiz to practise the vocabulary in the game zone!) and in Autumn 2 children are writing extending sentences about their town and comparing their town with a town near Valencia.

Click here to watch the video about Turis.

In Spring 2 our Year 5 topic is called "los planetas" - children are learning the names of the planets, numbers up to 1000, linking numbers to data about the planets and using adjectives to describe the planets.

Summer 1 is all about sports in Year 5 - naming sports, giving our opinion of sports, using adjectives to describe sports and linking back to Year 3 to recall the days of the week and say when we do each sports.

Year 6

Year 6 have really impressed me during Autumn 1 with demonstrating their understanding of adjective agreements.  They have been learning colours, items of clothing and using these to describe their school uniform.  This half term they are learning to say who is in their family and describe them.

In Spring 1 children have been learning how to say the letters of the alphabet in French, this unit of work has been very "cross-curricular" with links to geography.  Children have learnt the compass points in French and then linked these to towns and cities.

In Summer 1 our topic is called "Quel temps fait-il?".  Children will learn some weather phrases and the seasons.  We will also link back to our geography of France from Spring 1 to give a weather forecast.  We will also compare the weather in England to the weather in France and French speaking countries.

In Summer 2 we are going to do an introduction to Spanish ready for Year 7 at WSSC.  We will cover giving our name, numbers 1-12, opinions and some sight seeing in Barcelona!

World Book Day

Each year in Modern Foreign Languages we have linked our learning to this whole school event.  This year we have read "Vamos a Cazar un oso" (We're going on a Bear Hunt) in Year 2.  Children learnt some key words from the story and we read the story together, repeating the well known phrases.  Both Year 3 and Year 5 have read "Book Fiesta".  It is a bilingual book about book day in Mexico.  After reading the book, children wrote sentences about who they read with and where they read.  In Year 6, children wrote their own book review about their favourite book.
