Modern Foreign Languages at Wickersley Northfield
At Wickersley Northfield we are committed to embedding a positive attitude to language learning amongst our pupils and develop an awareness and appreciation of cultural similarities and differences. Our aims are to foster an interest in language learning and develop children’s confidence in speaking by encouraging them to join in with songs, rhymes, short stories and games in order to practise the language in an enjoyable way.
Year 2
In Autumn 1 children will be learning how to greet each other in Spanish, ask how someone is feeling, say how they are feeling and say what they are called. We begin each Spanish lesson with our "start of the lesson poem" and 2 children are chosen from the class to lead this poem. This builds helps to build their confidence in speaking whilst practising pronunciation.
In Autumn 2 children will learn numbers up to 12 and how to say how old they are.
In Spring 1 they will learn some shapes and then they will link these to the numbers they learnt in Autumn 2 by counting different shapes.
In Spring 2 we link our Spanish learning to World Book Day. In 2021 we read "Vamos a cazar un oso" (We're going on a bear hunt).
In Summer 1 and 2 children will learn colours and animals and learn how the word order is different in Spanish to English. We will read "Oso Pardo" (Brown Bear) and then children will write their own version of this story in Spanish.

Year 3
In Autumn 1 children will be focusing on the sounds the letters "z, ll, y and j" make in Spanish. To reinforce these letter sounds they will read the story "Burbuja la Bruja". They will also be learning classroom instructions (challenge them to play noughts and crosses with you in the games zone to practise!) and will be writing about their classroom using the different words for "the" in Spanish and making nouns plural.
In Autumn 2 they will learn pencil case items and say what they have in their pencil case.
In Spring 1 our Spanish topic is called "mi cumpleaños" (my birthday). Children will learn numbers up to 31, months and then they will link these together to say when their birthday is.
In Summer 1 our topic is "La Oruga muy Hambrienta" (the very hungry caterpillar). We are going to learn the days of the week, some fruits, healthy and unhealthy foods and then read the story in Spanish. Children will then write their own version of this story.
In Summer 2 we will revisit the colours and learn about how many countries in the world speak Spanish. They will use the colours to describe the colours of South American flags.

Each Spanish lesson will begin in the same way with a retrieval task to help recall key words and concepts from the previous lesson and the previous half term.

MFL Policy 2022-23
"I can" statements
Each half term, children are given "I can" statements with the outcomes for each lesson. At the end of each lesson, children review their learning and self assess against the "I can" statements which are glued in their books. Click here to see the "I can" statements for each year group for Autumn 1.
Year 4
Year 5
In Autumn 1 children will be revisiting some learning from Y3 - classroom instructions and pencil case items. They will then move onto the topic of "mi pueblo" and learn places in a town (look for a quiz to practise the vocabulary in the game zone!) and in Autumn 2 children will be writing extending sentences about their town and comparing their town with a town near Valencia.

In Spring 1 our Year 5 topic is called "Los planetas" - children will be learning the names of the planets, numbers up to 1000, linking numbers to data about the planets and using adjectives to describe the planets.
In Spring 2 we will link our Spanish learning to World Book Day by saying what we are reading and using adjective to describe books.
Summer 1 and 2 is all about sports in Year 5 - naming sports, giving our opinion of sports, using adjectives to describe sports and linking back to Year 3 to recall the days of the week and say when we do each sports.
Throughout Year 5 children will be encouraged to become independent learners by embedding their dictionary skills which were introduced in Year 3.

Year 6
In Autumn 1+2 children our topic is "La Comida" (food). Children will be learning different foods and drinks, giving food preferences and learning about typical Spanish food.
In Spring 1 children we learn how to say the alphabet in Spanish and we will be discussing the importance of learning a foreign language.
In Spring 2 our learning will be linked to World Book Day and we will be reading a book called "Biblioburro". Below is a video link from the BBC website about Luis who sets up a travelling library in Colombia with his 2 donkeys to take books to remote villages.
In Summer 1+2 our topic is called "Las Vacaciones" (holidays) - we will be learning countries, types of transport, weather and learning about Spanish cities and what they are famous for.

World Book Day
Each year in Spanish we link our learning to this whole school event. This year we have read "Vamos a Cazar un oso" (We're going on a Bear Hunt) in Year 2. Children learnt some key words from the story and we read the story together, repeating the well known phrases. Both Year 3 and Year 5 have read "Book Fiesta". It is a bilingual book about book day in Mexico. After reading the book, children wrote sentences about who they read with and where they read. Next year, Y6 will be reading a book based on a true story called "Biblioburro". It about a man in Colombia who sets up a travelling library on a donkey (un burro) to take books to children in faraway villages.
